  5.     The first U.S. President to be assassinated was Abraham
  6. Lincoln -- or was it Zachary Taylor? Last week the coroner in
  7. Louisville exhumed the body of the 12th President, who died on
  8. July 9, 1850, five days after consuming a large amount of iced
  9. cherries and milk at a sweltering Independence Day celebration
  10. at the Washington Monument. Back then, Taylor's sudden death was
  11. attributed to gastroenteritis. But Clara Rising, a Florida
  12. writer who is researching a book about Taylor, believes he may
  13. have been murdered.

  15.     Samples of Taylor's hair, bones and fingernails will be
  16. tested for traces of arsenic poisoning. If any are found, they
  17. would strengthen Rising's theory that Taylor was killed by
  18. proslavery Southerners angered by his support for the admission
  19. of California and New Mexico into the Union as free states. Said
  20. Dabney Taylor, the President's great-great-great grandson:
  21. "Rumors have been running through the family for years. I'm just
  22. glad somebody is finally going to do something about it." The
  23. prime suspects: Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky, Vice President
  24. Millard Fillmore and two unnamed Georgia politicians.
